Griffin Gaming Partners is the largest dedicated gaming venture capital firm in the world, managing around $1.5 billion across three funds and backing 80–110 companies. Its portfolio has included some of the most important names in gaming and adjacent tech, such as AppLovin, Scopely, Discord, and Aptos.

For the sports media industry, Griffin is worth paying attention to for a simple reason. It acts as a real-time signal of where serious gaming and esports capital is moving.

Griffin’s Thesis in the founders’ own words:

Levin: “Gaming is the fastest growing consumer trend in the world… a 248% growth trajectory over the next 10 years.”

Sanderson: “The lines have blurred across gaming, media, sport, and social connectivity.”

What that actually means in practice is far more structural.

Griffin is effectively investing in attention systems. Gaming and esports are the only mediums that combine content, distribution, monetisation, and community into one loop. A player does not just consume a game, they live in it, spend in it, socialise in it, and return daily. That makes gaming fundamentally different from film, TV, or even social media, which still rely on fragmented engagement.

When Levin calls gaming the fastest-growing consumer trend, the real point is time capture. Gaming owns more hours per user than almost any other format, and that time converts directly into monetisation through live services, in-game economies, subscriptions, and commerce. Griffin’s core belief is that whoever controls long-duration engagement will control the most valuable parts of the consumer internet.

Sanderson’s idea of blurred lines takes this further. Gaming is no longer a vertical, it is becoming infrastructure for culture. A football fan does not just watch matches, they play EA FC, follow creators, engage in fantasy, and participate in communities. A combat sports fan moves between fights, games, and betting or prediction platforms. These are no longer separate industries, but one converging ecosystem where content, community, and commerce reinforce each other.
