Inside Disney+’s Sports Strategy

How Disney is using its $84 billion sports portfolio to drive streaming engagement, retention, advertising and ESPN upgrades.

Disney has spent decades building ESPN around live sport. In 2026, the more interesting shift is how much of that sport is starting to appear inside Disney+.

Disney+ is no longer being treated only as an entertainment streaming service. It is becoming Disney’s wider digital home, bringing together films, television, ESPN, advertising, subscriptions and eventually more of the company’s consumer ecosystem. Sport gives people another reason to open that app regularly.

Disney+ is not replacing ESPN or becoming a full sports service. ESPN remains Disney’s dedicated sports product. Disney+ gives existing customers another place to watch selected ESPN content, while introducing sport to more casual viewers and creating another route into ESPN subscriptions and bundles.

The strategy changes by market. The US uses selected games to drive ESPN upgrades, Brazil puts most ESPN content inside Disney+ Premium, Australia includes ESPN across all tiers, while Europe ranges from full LaLiga seasons to just one selected match a week.

Disney can therefore use sport differently depending on what it wants to achieve: more engagement, lower churn, higher priced bundles, greater advertising revenue, stronger local relevance or access to audiences ESPN does not reach as strongly.
