Telemundo has built one of the most selective sports portfolios in US media.
At the centre is its $600 million investment in the FIFA World Cup. Around it sit the Bundesliga, selected Liga MX clubs, the United States men’s and women’s national teams, and Spanish language coverage of the NFL, NBA, MLB and Olympics.
The strategy is simple. Major tournaments bring in large audiences, while weekly football, national team matches and year round programming give those viewers a reason to stay. Telemundo distributes that content across free television, streaming, digital platforms and local stations, extending its reach beyond the biggest events.
The Bundesliga will be an important test. Telemundo will show more than 100 matches a season during the 3 years after the 2026 World Cup, giving it regular football at a fraction of the cost of another premium rights package.
The question is whether Telemundo can turn the audiences built around the World Cup into regular viewers of the wider portfolio.
