The NFL distributed $14.5 billion across its 32 clubs in the financial year ending March 2026. Each franchise received around $453 million before selling a ticket, sponsorship or hospitality package of its own.
Yet one of the league’s most interesting businesses was built with just $8 million from each owner.
Since 2013, the clubs have contributed a combined $256 million to 32 Equity, equivalent to 1.8% of one year’s national distribution, but the platform gives the NFL something its traditional commercial agreements do not: ownership in the companies and assets its influence helps make more valuable.
The advantage?
The NFL can offer access to all 32 clubs, more than 100 million fans, official rights, data, content, major events and global distribution. A conventional partner pays to use these assets. Through 32 Equity and the league’s wider ownership system, the NFL can also retain part of the upside.
The model has evolved from minority investments in companies such as Fanatics, Hyperice and STRIVR into joint ventures, warrants and businesses built around NFL controlled assets. The league now owns 10% of ESPN, helped create EverPass and Skydance Sports, and has committed capital to a professional flag football league.
Through these deals, the NFL is taking ownership in more of the infrastructure through which football is sold, watched and expanded. 32 Equity allows the league to earn from its commercial power while also retaining part of the value that power helps create.
